As we approach some more UFC action this coming weekend, let’s take a few minutes and thank Dana White on a job well done. Honestly, not words that I ever thought would come out of my mouth or in this case, my keyboard. What all began with UFC having events in the middle of the pandemic to rumors of Dana White purchasing his own fight island, the UFC was creating controversy for itself. However, cooler heads prevailed and the UFC postponed events until a few weeks ago as we learned more about COVID-19. Running empty arena events in Jacksonville, the UFC managed to run 3 events (1 on PPV in a 10 day stretch).
Looking at it objectively, the product was pretty damn good. Unlike pro wrestling a UFC event doesn’t have to feed off a crowd’s energy to have a feeling of authenticity. Everyone involved was wearing the proper PPE and social distancing prevailed. For me, the ultimate sign of success was that people from the sporting world were talking about the event and not the outside circumstances. Whether it be outstanding performances to questionable officiating, the fights were the star of these events and that’s what we need! There was and still continues to be a void in the sporting world, but the UFC cashed in on a once in a lifetime opportunity to be the main act in town. And for that, I salute them! Cheers 🍻
