In this day and age of everyone being readily woke, I have a confession to make. I have Neanderthal like tendencies and one of them being that I don’t always give women’s sports a fair chance. Now that I have a daughter (hence being the old geek) I will admit that I am trying to watch more women’s sports. The title of this brief piece comes from pro wrestling, in which one of my favorite performers of all time AJ Lee started an online campaign to give Divas a chance after women’s matches were merely treated as eye candy and bathroom breaks on a 3 hour show. AJ’s impassioned plea led to fans taking the cause online and helping institute change. At this point, I would say the women are carrying the show and it’s all thanks to AJ’s influence no matter what revisionist history the WWE may spin.
One athlete that makes me want to watch is Sabrina Ionescu. After seeing her touching speech at the Kobe Bryant memorial, I was intrigued as to why Kobe took a special liking to her. It’s unfortunate that she injured himself early on in the WNBA season. Maya Moore is another inspirational figure as she sacrificed part of her career to pursue social justice and helped a man gain his freedom after being improperly imprisoned. Furthermore, I hope to be watching the beautiful game with my daughter when she is of age. For anyone that wants to be a detractor of women’s soccer, I implore you to watch videos of Marta de Silva. She is so good that she could play with anyone and carry her weight. There are so many other phenomenal athletes such as the Williams sisters, Katie Ledecky, Lexi Thompson and so on.
So my plea here is to expand our horizon’s and give women’s sports a chance. It is highly entertaining and captivating, just as much as the men. Also and I’m guilty of this as well, no more saying she plays well for a girl…. just say she is a straight baller. No need to make comparisons to men, women are doing perfectly well on their own. So as Nike says – “Just Do It!”
