To take from the Alanis Morisette classic, isn’t it ironic that this site gets up and running and will feature random sports ramblings from a hardcore fan and yet we’re in the middle of a global pandemic with no major sports in sight? Take that in for a second, the sports world has come to a grinding halt and there isn’t a clear end in sight! Sure, there is plenty of motivating factors driving the leagues to resume play primarily economic with a little sprinkle of overall morale of the sports fan, but I appreciate that they are playing it safe and prioritizing the safety of the players, fans, and team/arena staff. Well, all except the WWE (we’ll tackle that one later). I’ve been saying it and I feel it’s true, Rudy Gobert’s Covid-19 diagnosis scared enough people to shut down the sports world and ultimately helped save lives as horrible as that sounds. It pains me to think that a well anticipated Champion’s League match for Atalanta in Milan was essentially a bomb that spread this horrid virus throughout Italy and Spain. Although saddening, eliminating these games and public outings has helped in the efforts to “flatten the curve.”
But what does that leave us as fans with? Even if we are all cooped up at home, we fans are consumers and we want to consume sports content. Again there have been attempts to find alternatives to captivate the fan base. From E-sports with the NBA 2K20 players tournament to even the ill-conceived horse tournament for charity, efforts have been made to appease our hunger. Yet, it still doesn’t feel right. It’s not the same as watching a pitcher’s duel, or seeing two players on fire trying to outshoot each other from all spots on the court, or seeing a goalie stand on his head during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. If you take a quick count of what events we have lost, it’s staggering. The cancellation of March Madness, Wimbledon, Euro 2020, and the Olympics are just a few of the events we will be without this year and yes, it sucks, it really really sucks, but let’s all be cognizant of the greater good here.
So I end with this: what now, what do we do? I’ve found some alternatives from watching old games, reading sports books, popping on sports radio, and here’s one spending some more time with the family. Take advantage of the time away from sports to make you appreciate it more and most importantly stay safe out there!
